Kristina quickly grows lonely. Trey is almost never in Reno and she just
wants someone to love, and for someone to love her. Brad is also
lonely, so they begin making love every night so as to fill in the
lonely dark spaces. One night, Brad's kids' mom, Angela returns home,
and Kristina is left hanging. She has nowhere to live, no legitimate
job, and no hope. When Trey finally returns home, they get an apartment
together. They try living with Hunter for a while, as Trey wants to be
part of a "real" family. Things do not work out with Hunter, though, in
the end, and they bring him back to Kristina's mom. Pretty soon, Trey
and Kristina have little to no money. They decide to steal Kristina's
mom's check book and cash it in her name. They are desperate. She almost
gets caught. When this still doesn't provide enough money, they ask the
Mexican mafia for a very big amount of meth, and swear to sell it and
pay them back. When this plan fails, they must flee the country, as
there is no way you can mess with "La Eme". They decide to flee to
California. With nowhere to sleep, they crash in their car. A policeman
catches them, asks to search the car, and finds a huge amount of crystal
meth. When sent to jail, they are separated. Kristina finds out that
she is pregnant. She wonders what she will do. At the end, she
contemplates her life, and her future, in her prison cell. "Hopefully,
most hopefully of all, by the time I get out of here, the monster will
be nothing more than a distant memory. An unforgettable nightmare"
(679). Kristina's final thoughts are "Yeah, yeah. I realize that's an
awful lot of hoping. But hey, I've always been an optimist...don't ask
me why" (680).Wednesday, March 27, 2013

Unfortunately, Kristina and her dad do not make it in time to Hunter's
baptism. Her mother is beyond upset and disappointed. About a month
later, Kristina gets a call from Trey, and this starts up a whole new
life for her. They quickly fall in love and, blinded my lust, Kristina
starts to forget that she has responsibilities toward her kid, and
toward her family. She spends her time getting high and making love with
Trey, instead of caring for the ones who matter. Then, Kristina's mom
kicks her out. "I don't care where you go. Live on the street, sleep in
your car. Just don't come back here. And don't ask for money. Get help,
Kristina" (350). Kristina then decides to ask Brad, Trey's cousin, if
she can stay with him, and he agrees. Brad, who is a drug dealer, offers
Kristina a job. Her first client is her baby's father, the rapist, and
she almost turns away before realizing that a deal is just a deal. She
also is a nanny for Brad's kids, who always ask her if their mommy will
ever come back. This stings.Thursday, March 14, 2013
18th Birthday
It's almost Kristina's 18th birthday, and she is ready to celebrate. Her sister, Leigh, is coming in town with her partner, Heather, who is a cheerleader. Then, her and family find out that her father is also coming in town with his girlfriend, Linda Sue. Leigh is furious, having not seen her father since she was young, but reluctantly agrees after Kristina asks her and Heather to be Hunter's godparents. Unfortunately, Kristina and Heather start off on the wrong foot. Heather suspects of Kristina's addiction, and Kristina knows of Heather's bulimia. When Kristina's dad finally shows, things get heated. Leigh attacks him with questions, ones that she knows he is incapable of answering. "What took you so long, Father? Too busy to pick up the phone?" (205) Kristina interrupts, though, just as things are about to get ugly. Before her dad leaves, he asks her if she has some meth. She acquiesces, so he says he'll take her out in Reno on Friday night. The night before Hunter's baptism. Will they make it in time?Saturday, March 9, 2013

The Beginning...
Glass, by Ellen Hopkins, is the sequel to Crank. It is the story of a teenage girl, Kristina,
who, after a summer spent with her father, turns to drugs. Crystal meth
is her best friend. She calls it the Monster, and calls herself Bree.
Bree is the side of her that loves meth, and everything that her mother
wouldn't approve of. At the end of Crank, Kristina is left with a baby.
She names him Hunter, and refuses to even think of his father, Brendan,
who sexually assaulted her. Now, she is struggling to take care of her
kid, to please her parents by getting back on track, and to ignore the
Monster's whining. She says that she wishes she could tell us that she
is getting her life back on track, and that she has forgotten about her
addiction to meth, but that she won't, because those would be lies. "But
if I told you those lies, you wouldn't really know my story. I want you
to know. Not a day passes when I don't think about getting high.
Strung" (15).
