The Beginning...

Glass, by Ellen Hopkins, is the sequel to Crank. It is the story of a teenage girl, Kristina, who, after a summer spent with her father, turns to drugs. Crystal meth is her best friend. She calls it the Monster, and calls herself Bree. Bree is the side of her that loves meth, and everything that her mother wouldn't approve of. At the end of Crank, Kristina is left with a baby. She names him Hunter, and refuses to even think of his father, Brendan, who sexually assaulted her. Now, she is struggling to take care of her kid, to please her parents by getting back on track, and to ignore the Monster's whining. She says that she wishes she could tell us that she is getting her life back on track, and that she has forgotten about her addiction to meth, but that she won't, because those would be lies. "But if I told you those lies, you wouldn't really know my story. I want you to know. Not a day passes when I don't think about getting high. Strung" (15).

Near the beginning of the book, she goes off to find her old friend, Robyn. She tells her mom it is for a college fair, but she is actually in search of some "fun". When she arrives, she finds what she is looking for, and a little more. A boy, Trey, is also at Robyn's. He is actually Robyn's provider, and Kristina Bree finds him cute. He seems interested too, and tells her that he often goes up near where Kristina lives. When she gets home, at 4am, she applies for a job at 7-Eleven to pay back Trey.
